Journal Entry-October 15, 1919
Mother always said 'be careful what you wish for - you might get it!' I remember sitting on the stone wall and waiting for the mail, wishing that someday something would come and take me away from here. It's not that I hated this house, it's just that I wanted to see what the rest of the world had. Well, something came and took me all right! It took me right to the Western Front! I should have listened to mother.
The war is over now. I never thought I'd make it back. Today I walked up the dirt road past the stone wall. The leaves are changing. In fact, some are starting to fall. I watched two squirrels chasing each other through the trees, performing unbelievable mid-air acrobatics. It was all over a nut. I stopped and looked at the big red house. I couldn't believe I ever wanted to leave.
